This story is an adaptation of one of the oldest quiz questions known. It was found on a six meter long papyrus scroll which was dated to the age of more than 3½ thousand years. Of course the Egyptians didn't use algebra the way we do. Letters and variables weren't invented until the 16th century by Vieta and others.
